What’s the difference between dentures and partials?
Dentures replace all of the teeth on an upper or lower arch. They can be secured with adhesive or dental implants. A partial denture only replaces some of the teeth, fitting in line with existing teeth like a piece of a puzzle. Partials are secured with hidden clasps or implants and, like dentures, can be removed for easy cleaning.
How are dentures made?
First, Dr. Head will thoroughly examine your teeth and soft tissues to determine which kind of dentures are right for you. If you’re in good health and have adequate bone density, he may recommend implant-supported dentures—a modern alternative to removable dentures. Once all oral health concerns are resolved, Dr. Head will begin the treatment process. He may take X-rays, impressions, and digital images. He will also discuss your aesthetic preferences. With dentures, we can control the size, shape, and color of your teeth. Dr. Head will send all of the information he collects to a dental lab, where a technician will handcraft your custom dentures. Dr. Head can provide immediate-load dentures while you wait for your permanent dentures to arrive.
How long do dentures last?
The life of your denture will depend on your personal hygiene and overall health. Over time, your dentures will experience natural wear and tear. For optimal comfort and stability, we recommend relining your dentures every two years. If you’ve had your denture for more than seven years, come in for a refitting to avoid serious damage to your mouth’s hard and soft tissues.
How do I care for my dentures?
Dentures should be cared for like natural teeth. You should brush your dentures regularly to remove plaque and food deposits, and soak them over night in a denture-cleaning solution. It’s also important to brush your gums with a soft toothbrush and see us for hygiene visits and checkups at least twice a year.
